Spanish

We believe language is essential to most human activities. It is the principal means, by which we experience, create and interpret the changing world in which we live. It is the way we think and communicate.

We believe that learning other languages is essential in a global world. It allows students to gain access to realities beyond their native language concepts and thus contributes to international understanding.

In our language courses, we aim to provide a programme that allows students to develop proficiency in the target language. In addition, our courses strive to offer a range of opportunities to become better acquainted with the culture, customs, history and geography of the countries where the language is spoken.

Spanish Beginners
This is an introduction course to the Spanish language and culture. The student will learn the basics of the language through a theme-based curriculum encompassing the four language skills – speaking, writing, listening and reading (as stated in the MYP Curriculum handbook). Themes include personal information, family, school, home, sports and hobbies, clothing, the body, geography, the weather, customs and culture in Spanish-speaking countries.

Spanish Intermediate
Intermediate 1 is a continuation of the Beginner’s course. Themes taught in the Beginner’s course are reviewed and reinforced. The curriculum continues with a thematic approach and covers themes such as lifestyles, shopping, the environment you live in, holiday travel and future plans and culture in Spanish-speaking countries. There is also a stronger emphasis on reading comprehension skills, comprehending a variety of written formats and writing in a variety of formats (notes, invitations, poems, paragraphs, etc.)

Spanish Advanced
Advanced Spanish offers the student an intensification of the application of previously-acquired knowledge. Its focus is not only on the extension of previous knowledge, but also the acquisition and advancement of learning Spanish grammar and vocabulary. Some themes include entertainment and media, youth, mental and physical health, conditions of life in different cultures, relationships, technology and life in the past and in the future. As well as these themes, students are introduced to Spanish and Latin American literature and more advanced writing formats such as business letters, résumés and short essays.
